The human body was built to move. Modern life had other plans.
Most of us spend the majority of our day sitting – at a desk, in a car, on a couch. And while it feels restful, prolonged sitting is one of the most physically demanding things we put our bodies through.
The effects are subtle at first. Then one day, you notice that your lower back aches by mid-afternoon, your hips feel tight when you stand up, and your neck and shoulders carry a tension that never quite goes away.
That’s not bad luck. That’s what happens when your body stays still for too long.
What’s Happening in Your Body While You Sit
When you sit for extended periods, a predictable chain of events unfolds:
• Your hip flexors shorten and tighten as they hold you in a seated position
• Your glutes switch off – they’re not needed when you’re sitting, so they stop firing
• Your lower back absorbs load and compression it was never designed to handle for hours at a time
• Your upper back rounds, your chest closes, and your neck juts forward to look at a screen
Over time, your body adapts to this position. Muscles shorten and lengthen permanently. Joints develop restricted movement. And what started as mild discomfort becomes a persistent, background hum of tension and pain.
You Don’t Need a Standing Desk to Make a Difference
The most powerful intervention isn’t a piece of expensive equipment – it’s simply interrupting the pattern. Breaking up sitting time regularly is more beneficial than sitting all day and then exercising for an hour.
Some practical ways to do this:
• Set a timer to stand and move for 2-3 minutes every 45-60 minutes
• Take phone calls standing or walking
• Do a simple hip flexor or chest stretch at your desk during breaks
• Take the long way to the kitchen, bathroom, or meeting room
How Massage Fits In
Remedial massage is one of the most effective tools for undoing the physical patterns that desk life creates. We can release the hip flexors, reactivate the glutes, free up the thoracic spine, and address the neck and shoulder tension that accumulates over long hours at a screen.
But the most powerful results come when we combine that in-session work with smarter daily habits. Massage opens the door – movement keeps it open.
Your body deserves better than a chair for 8 hours a day. Small changes to how you move through your day can make a genuine, lasting difference.
